BeeHiveSail & Parks Package

Provides Access to State and National Treasures

Enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Penobscot Bay and beyond with the new Sail and Parks Package that includes free passes to the high-altitude parks that surround Maine’s windjammer sailing grounds. The Maine Windjammer Association invites guests to spend some extra time either before or after their 3- to 6-day cruise to explore Acadia National Park, Camden Hills State Park, and the new 420-foot Observatory at Fort Knox.  Boasting the tallest peaks in mid-coast Maine, these state and national parks offer spectacular views of islands, lighthouses and windjammers, along with excellent hiking and sightseeing opportunities.

The Sail and Parks Package offers a perfect combination; from the decks of the venerable vessels, guests have always enjoyed the incomparable splendor of the Maine coastline.  Guests signing up for this package will enjoy all the amenities, traditions, and adventure of an historic windjammer cruise, including the famous Down East Lobster Bake on a secluded island beach; they will also have an opportunity to visit the parks that provide the scenic beauty they view from aboard the tall ships.

Sailing Down East, guests can readily spot Cadillac and Sargent Mountains on Mt. Desert Isle in Acadia National Park.  When the windjammers anchor in 7-mile-long Somes Sound beneath these mountains, guests are afforded views of the only fjord on the east coast of the United States; part of 47,000 acres of land that was established as the first national park east of the Mississippi River.  Windjammer guests who receive free passes to Acadia National Park can enjoy access for a full week to hike granite peaks, bike historic carriage roads, relax on one of many beaches, take guided wildlife and bird watching tours, go horseback riding, or take scenic driving tours; they may be able to view their windjammer from a scenic overlook!

CamdenThe skyline of the Camden Hills is a familiar profile on the horizon when the windjammers return to port after a cruise; the State Park is located a few minutes north of Camden.  Tickets provided to windjammer guests allow entrance to over 30 miles of well-mapped hiking trails and the Mt. Battie auto road to the summit, where sweeping views of Penobscot Bay and the windjammer cruising grounds can be enjoyed.

Fort Knox was established in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River valley against possible British naval incursion, after Maine’s history of disputes with British Canada over the northeast border and the area between Castine and the rich lumber city of Bangor. It is one of the best-preserved fortifications on the New England seacoast and boasts a newly built 420-foot Observation Tower.  A one-minute elevator ride takes visitors to the top of the tallest public bridge-observatory in the world, from which visitors appreciate spectacular vistas of the Penobscot River Valley and the Bay.

Air & Sea Package

Windjammer guests can get a jump on their Maine sailing vacation and also beat the traffic this summer with the Air & Sea Package offered by the Maine Windjammer Association. For a $150 upgrade above the cost of any 3- to 6-day windjammer cruise, the package includes round-trip flights from Boston to Rockland, plus transfers and taxes.

This special cost-saving package includes a choice of 5 non-stop flights via Cape Air from Boston’s Logan Airport to the Knox County Airport in Rockland,  plus ground transportation to and from the windjammer docks in Camden and Rockland via Schooner Bay Taxi.

Guests will no doubt enjoy the one-hour flight from Boston.  Sights of the bustling city will give way to unsurpassed aerial views of the spectacular Maine coast, and as the flight approaches Rockland, fliers—soon-to-be-sailors—will spot the Owl’s Head Lighthouse atop craggy rocks jutting out to the sea. They may even get a bird’s eye view of some of the twelve tall ships of the fleet under full sail, heading for their home ports of Camden and Rockland.

To take advantage this convenient travel arrangement, vacationers should mention the Air & Sea Package at the time they reserve their windjammer cruise on any of the 12 historic vessels. The package can be combined with any carrier that services Boston, when booked directly with Cape Air.
